The free-to-play multiplayer mode of Halo Infinite has been available to play for nearly a month now, launching in an open beta test that transitioned to an unexpected but welcome early release. Despite a few performance issues, Halo Infinite’s multiplayer mode received a predominantly positive response, and the success of the game’s multiplayer mode only made players more eager to see what Halo Infinite’s campaign mode, slated for a December 8 release, had to offer.

The campaign mode for Halo Infinite launched simultaneously worldwide on December 8, at 10 a.m. Pacific Standard Time, on PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series consoles, and Xbox Game Pass subscribers received free day-one launch access to the game. There were a few hiccups, as some people pointed out that they were unable to download the game even 20 minutes after the game launched. But the fact that so many gamers were posting about the issue on social media demonstrates how eager fans have been to hop into the Halo Infinite campaign the second it became available.

On Steam, Halo Infinite already has a “Mostly Positive” rating, but the great majority of those reviews are likely based on the game’s multiplayer mode, which has been available to play since November 15. On Metacritic, there are not yet any user ratings available because players will not be permitted to review the game until noon on December 9. However, there are already a couple of hundred critic reviews of Halo Infinite’s campaign mode on review aggregator sites like Metacritic and OpenCritic, and the majority are extremely positive.

Halo Infinite’s campaign mode has been touted by some critics as being the best single-player experience ever created by 343 Industries. During the Xbox Games Showcase in June 2020, 343 Industries called the game a “spiritual reboot” of the series, though it is still considered a sequel to Halo 5. But Halo Infinite strips away the epic scale of Halo 4 and 5 and instead takes players back to basics, putting them in control of the iconic Master Chief as he battles his way across one of the Halo rings, taking down Covenant aliens along the way.

Halo Infinite is available on PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
