Hannibal, which aired on NBC and was based on 1991’s Silence of the Lambs, detailed the relationship between the infamous psychiatrist Hannibal Lecter (played by Mads Mikkelsen) and an early-career FBI profiler (Hugh Darcy) who empathizes with serial killers. The Emmy-nominated series, which ran from 2013-2015, also featured performances by Laurence Fishburne and Gillian Anderson. Hemlock Grove, which debuted as one of Netflix’s first original series in 2013, is a werewolf-focused horror series produced by Roth. Hemlock Grove starred Bill Skarsgard and Famke Janssen and was based on a novel of the same name by Brian McGreevy, who co-wrote the series with Lee Shipman.

The deal was announced in a joint statement by Max Einhorn, SVP of Acquisitions & Co-Productions for FilmRise, and Nicolas Atlan, President of Gaumont. All three seasons of Hannibal (39 episodes) and Hemlock Grove (33 episodes) are included in the new distribution deal. “These beloved horror series are welcome additions to FilmRise. Bryan Fuller’s ‘Hannibal’ was a creative achievement for network TV when it launched on NBC, as was Hemlock Grove as one of Netflix’s early original series," Einhorn said. “We are excited to be among the first truly free streaming destinations to offer these shows.” The deal was negotiated by Jonitha Keymoore, VP, Global Content Acquisitions, for FilmRise and Gary Marenzi for Gaumont.
While Hannibal is still currently streaming on Hulu, fans of Hemlock Grove were disappointed to hear that the series would be leaving Netflix in October, despite being one of the earliest original series on the platform. The series’ popularity will no doubt make FilmRise’s acquisition a success, especially since the series stars one of horror’s most popular faces, Skarsgard. Both series have been praised for their contributions to the horror television genre, offering unique performances and perspectives on both Lecter’s character and traditional werewolf lore.
FilmRise is one of the largest free-with-ads streaming providers in the US. The acquisition of these two popular series will surely bring new attention their way in a sea of streaming content providers that only grows larger and more competitive.
