DeVito is known for his roles in the 1975 film One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, 1996’s Matilda and the popular television series It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. According to Rotten Tomatoes, DeVito won an Emmy and was nominated for a Golden Globe for his role in the television series Taxi.
He intended to pursue a career as a hairdresser and began studying cosmetics at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts.
“Applicants were required to perform a monologue in order to enter the school’s various programs, and the response he received for his audition convinced him that acting might be his career of choice,” his profile with Rotten Tomatoes stated.
Friends and fans of the popular entertainer took to Twitter to share their well-wishes.
Actor Christopher Lloyd, who previously worked with DeVito in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and Taxi, shared a photo of the two of them posed in front of a taxi cab.
“@DannyDeVito I wish you a very Happy Birthday and a beautiful year ahead!” his tweet read.
Actor Mark Ruffalo worked with DeVito on The Price, a play that ran from February 2017 to May 2017.
“It happens to be an icon’s birthday today,” Ruffalo wrote. “Sending you so much love, @dannydevito. Hope you have a legendary day!”
Fans alike published their birthday tributes for the actor, many of whom included photos of some of his most popular roles.
“@dannydevito Happy Birthday, you gorgeous hunk,” a tweet read, which was accompanied by a cake decorated with outlines of his hair, eyebrows and glasses.
“Happy 78th Birthday, Danny DeVito!” wrote another Twitter user, who went on to quote him. “‘It’s fun to be on the edge. You do your best work when you take chances.’”
Several photos of the roles DeVito played throughout the years, including in Hercules, The Simpsons and Batman Returns, were included in the tweet.
“Happy Birthday to the greatest Trash Man of all time,” a fan wrote, alluding to the wrestling alter-ego that Frank—DeVito’s character in It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia—created.
Similar sentiments and shots of his alter-ego circulated.
This is not the first time DeVito has experienced adoration from fans. In 2018, college students stumbled across a “cavernous shrine” to DeVito in a room behind a hand towel dispenser.
Fans were also eager to see what was behind DeVito’s seemingly NSFW tweets he published, but it turned out he was live tweeting during the premiere of his FXX show, Little Demon.
